Folks, let me introduce you to the Overton window. Named for Mr. Overton himself:

It describes a "window" in the range of public reactions to ideas in public discourse, in a spectrum of all possible options on an issue. Overton described a method for moving that window, thereby including previously excluded ideas, while excluding previously acceptable ideas.

The result: a shift in public acceptance/rejection for any given social phenomenon and the eventual legal allowing/outlawing of same! I highly recommend reading the Daily Kos article cited in the Wiki for an overview of how best to use this strategy for changing the climate of what constitutes acceptable positions in society.
